Lisa Marshall: Bio & Venues

Lisa Marshall

Lisa Marshall is a Rhythm & Blues singer who is influenced by Motown, Soul, and Rock n’Roll. Vocally inspired by vocalist like Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Mavis Staples and Janis Joplin. Her song-writing is primarily influenced by R&B, rock, and gospel such as Tina Turner, the above mentioned to Led Zeppelin, & the Rolling Stones and The Beatles.
She (Lisa Marshall)"belts 'em out like Janis Joplin and can gyrate like master contortionist Joe Cocker," writes Monterey journalist Beth Peerless - Monterey Herald ; Monterey, CA.
Marshall lives in Seattle,WA. She performs locally solo with her acoustic guitar and with her band, and is working on an acoustic act with “call and answer” style vocals with her 3 backup singers. She has released her first solo CD called “Simple”. The vocals are true to her style and love for R&B and Soul. The songs encompass a gritty, funky vibe, a departure from her past Southern Rock style. Lyrically she draws from early Blues singers speaking her beliefs, speaking out with a call out to up lift and empower her listeners...” erase from your mind all the bad that’s been done to you, all the good things you are let it shine, shine, shine...drinking cup raise it up, got my voice gonna raise it up!”-Swamp Song by Lisa Marshall. “I don’t like putting myself in a box. It’s difficult to predict what a song may evoke in the listener. Creativity should not have parameters, to live by categories stifles the very thing it (creativity) is intended to be. ” The CD will be released into the digital world of web radio, college radio, pod-casts, downloadable singles and album from her website www.lisamarshallmusic.com and digital distribution sites, and Marshall will begin short touring cycles of cities and festivals.
Current

Currently Lisa Marshall is focusing on CD Release Parties throughout the Northwest. Listen for her in the NW on KSER 90.7FM with host Clancy Dunigan Thursday November 13th, 2008 at 9:45pm. www.kser.org. She is also getting ready for a second Southeast Tour starting in Austin, TX during SXSW 2009.
Lisa recently toured, solo, throughout the Southeast, starting in Austin, TX. and ending up in her home town Virginia Beach, VA., in support of her first solo CD “Simple”, which was recorded and produced by her. She received airplay in both Austin and Virginia Beach. In May 2008, Marshall completed a West Coast tour and was asked to return to the Brookdale Lodge outside of Santa Cruz, CA. to open for Lydia Pense and Cold Blood.
"...that pretty little pixie was a musician through and through. She knew her chops and busted ass to get there. Then she opened her mouth. Good Lord! She barely comes up to my ribcage but she has got the voice of a serious belter, and refreshing. What really makes it is that when she sings a song..you can't imagine it being sung any other way." -Chopperman, Adventure Rider, WA.

Born and raised in Virginia Beach, VA., Lisa was brought up on The Beatles, Blues ala Janis Joplin, The Allman Brothers, Crosby, Stills , Nash & Young, and her Mother’s favorite Elvis and Motown records. She is a self taught musician. In addition to vocals, Lisa also plays guitar, bass, flute, harmonica, drums and percussion. Her self taught nature and her adoration for strong, soulful female vocalist is experienced through her music which weaves gut belting call and answer style vocals through R&B, funky rhythms. “I can put on an Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Janis Joplin CD and be brought to my knees. But, it’s also because of the musicianship of the songs. The swing those musicians put into those songs is unreal.”
Lisa Marshall moved to Los Angeles, CA. at age 21. After performing on dinner cruise ships and solo to backing tracks at various gay bars and cabaret type venues, she co-founded Peculiar Boogie which she fronted for 10 years. She and guitarist, Rebekah Coltman were the primary songwriters, and along with Susan Joyner (keys) they were a unique blend of a female fronted Southern Rock band featuring R&B style vocals and harmonies with a twist. This was no the South is gonna do it again band, as the lyrical content spoke of injustices, politics, and stories from a woman’s perspective. The band began playing and showcasing at some of L.A.’s hot spots such as the Troubadour and the Roxy, and perform up the Coast with Robben Ford and other acts like Koko Taylor, Big Brother and the Holding Company with whom Marshall also performed. The band received air play in Monterey regularly and in Europe and put out 2 CDs. The first self titled CD was self produced and sold over 5,000 copies. The second CD was produced and released by Marshall and Coltman and sold over 2,000 CDs before the band was officially put to rest. Both CDs are still being sold through CDBaby.com and digital distribution sites.
Lisa Marshall is a seasoned musician having toured the West Coast and Chicago. She has played California venues like the Coachhouse, Mystic Theater, The Catalyst, El Rey Theater, Alligator Lounge, Doc Ricketts, to Seattle hot spots, The Crocodile, Sunset Tavern, Conor Byrne’s and lent her voice backing Beverly Graham at the Bena Roya Hall raising money for Mrs. Graham’s non-profit organization Sack Lunch which feeds the homeless in downtown Seattle. Her drive to learn and push herself is evident by her current demo in which she is the musician playing all the instruments, songwriter, producer and engineer.

Quote Sheet

“Lisa Marshall is a singer and performer of incredible range, power and skill. She is one of a very select few vocalists that can take a song and breathe life and feeling into a performance that will take the listener on an emotional and joyful musical ride. She combines a solid foundation of old Motown R&B with a modern-day driving beat and then flavors it with a pinch of Southern rock. Her original songs are well crafted with intelligent lyrics, timeless melodies and a delivery that strips the song down to its raw emotions.” Kevin Fallon -owner and founder of Northwest Guitars, Bellevue, WA. www.northwestguitars.com
